How to Use Wrist Wraps

What the heck is a wrist wrap?

Now that the 2018 CrossFit Games have wrapped up, you’re probably inspired as all hell and ready to get some of the cool stuff you saw the athletes wearing.

A certain brand does very well at sponsoring the CrossFit games and making sure all the athletes are decked out in everything they could want for their workouts.

Apparel.

Knee Sleeves.

Shoes.

Ohhhh, the shoes. The women athlete lifters’ were everything!

But we noticed some of the athletes were rocking their own chosen brand of wrist wraps and it inspired us to put together this article on how to use them.

What are wrist wraps and why do we use them? 

If you’ve ever experienced any pain in your body, your natural reaction is to fix it.

But what about preventing it?

Some body parts, especially our wrists, need extra support during heavy lifts.

With a majority of the lifts done during a CrossFit session going over our head and supported by a locked out arm and wrist, its easy to see why wrist wraps are the most popular accessory in the gym.

The idea behind the wrist wrap is that it provides a significant amount of compression so as to prevent the wrist from bending excessively under a heavy lift. 

Types of Wraps

Wrist Wraps keep our wrists locked in place, allowing the wearer to receive support while lifting.

There are two different kinds of wrist wraps on the market, one with a tie closure and one with a velcro closure.

The tie closure type is usually made out of fabric, such as cotton, and requires the wearer to position the wrap on their wrist fully and then tuck in the string inside itself to stay put.

They’re sturdy, strong, and do the job. Designs are more versatile, because cotton fabric is easy to come by.

However, the structure of the wrap limits the user to having to remove the entire wrap just to adjust it.

Well, adjust no longer my lifting friend. 

This is where the velcro type comes in. 

Use the thumb loop as a guide, wrap and attach the velcro and you’re done.

Readjust as needed, as often as you need it during your workout for more or less support.

Some are made in this fashion but with Neoprene material instead. Neoprene is amazing when you need warmth, but if you want to stay dry under your wraps, we recommend our anti-microbial blend of fabric.

Our velcro is meant to hold up to 10 lbs of resistance, so you can count on these straps to stay put while you smash around some weight.

Durable and Dependable

Our wrist wraps have the convenience of being able to be tightened and loosened without taking them off completely. You can make them extra tight for more support during a heavy PR lift and slightly looser for a more comfortable fit during a WOD.

Whatever your preferred level of support is you can get it with these wraps.

They easily twist on and off, tighten and loosen, and the velcro attachment makes them easier to adjust than cotton wrist wraps.

When your wrists need extra support you can count on our wraps to be strong, durable, and supportive while remaining comfortable. We all at one time have probably experienced some degree of wrist injury but if you haven’t, this is one injury that can sideline your training for a little while.

Wearing wrist wraps can help you avoid injury by providing compression and support to the area. However, wrist wraps should not be used to hide existing mobility issues or injuries, at the risk of injuring them further.
